It’s the holiday season, and for many, that means taking a break from healthy eating and typical exercise routines. With the colder weather and shortened days, it is understandable that people would rather sit by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate than hit the gym or eat a salad. But even though it is natural and okay to take a break from routine, getting back into the swing of things after the new year begins isn’t as difficult as it seems. Here are some tips for maintaining healthy habits in 2021, and picking up new, beneficial habits.

If your New Year’s resolution feels daunting, don’t stress too much because you aren’t alone in that feeling. When getting into a new routine, start small, and do your best to make it enjoyable. For example, if your goal for 2021 is to exercise more, schedule your gym days for only a few days of the week, instead of all seven. You could also find exercise classes you enjoy and take them with your friends. This way, you prevent yourself from getting burnt out and giving up.

Having a good support system is also a key factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Be sure to talk with your friends and family about your goals, and any struggles you’re having. These people can lift you up when you feel unmotivated, and hold you accountable.

When maintaining and starting new healthy habits, it is also important to give yourself some grace and acknowledge that you won’t likely be perfect 100% of the time. If you’re trying to eat healthier but indulged in a milkshake, don’t beat yourself up! Everyone has ups and downs, and sometimes life gets in the way of perfection. All you can do is your best, and try to recover from mistakes.
