One of our Myocarditis Foundation Board Members, Dr. Bettina Heidecker, in collaboration with a number of cardiologists and scientists both in Europe as well as the United States, collaborated on an article titled: Myocarditis following COVID-19 vaccine. It speaks of the incidence, presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology, therapy and outcomes put into prospective.
One of the main goals of this article is to objectively report potential adverse outcomes after vaccinations, as this is crucial to raise awareness amongst physicians and scientists by providing robust data on the prevalence, incidence and clinical presentation patients with this potential complication. It is important to identify affected patients early and provide timely therapy where required. This is relevant, as myocarditis can lead to severe arrythmias, and is one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac detain young adults based on autopsy studies. Furthermore, insight into vaccine-associated myocarditis may help to potentially identify markers for those who will develop this adverse event and to improve the development of the next generation of vaccines.
