On June 21st, the Sarah Knight Memorial Golf Tournament was held in Marion, IA. Golfers came from all over to be there for the Knight family and celebrate the memory of Sarah Knight.
Sarah was a vibrant 25-year-old bi-lingual kindergarten teacher just starting her second year of teaching. She had a passion for children and poured her heart and soul into her career. She truly loved her students and worked hard to make learning fun.
On September 26, 2011, Sarah spent a typical day as a kindergarten teacher. She taught during the day, attended a meeting in the late afternoon, and in the evening was working in her classroom on her lesson plans. Around 7:30 p.m. the school custodian discovered Sarah lying on her classroom floor where she had simply laid down and died.
The Sarah Knight Memorial Golf Tournament was organized to bring awareness to myocarditis, to raise money for the Myocarditis Foundation, and to raise money for a scholarship in Sarah’s name to be given to a bi-lingual education college student at Western Illinois University, Sarah’s alma mater.
Lindsey Davis, Director of the Myocarditis Foundation attended the Sarah Knight Memorial Golf Tournament was awestruck by the outpouring of support and love encompassing this event. The Knight family is truly amazing; they live all across the country and yet every member was there for this event. Sarah’s many friends from high school, college, and school were in attendance, all sharing memories, laughter, and tears throughout the day.
The day started with a rain-delay, but the storm rolled past and left a bright, sunny afternoon of golfing fun. The evening consisted of a dinner, raffle, and auction as well as several talks filled with memories of Sarah. In the end, over $8,000 was raised for the Myocarditis Foundation, greatly helping to fund the Foundation’s research and awareness programs.
The Foundation extended their gratitude to the Knight family, their friends and community for this wonderful fundraiser. We are honored to know you all and are looking forward to the 2nd Annual Sarah Knight Memorial Golf Tournament on June 13th, 2014.
