Precious Two-Year-Old Suddenly Taken by Myocarditis

As told by Destin’s father

My name is Deon Johnson. I am the proud father of three until recently. I lost my youngest at two years old to a rare condition called Myocarditis. He was born January 14, 2013. Four months after he was born, I lost his mother, so here I am alone with three kids. My oldest who is my daughter DeaAvion is eight years old, my second Dereon who is 5, and baby Destin who was two.

The night before his passing I slept with him the whole night, he was coughing a lot, he came into my room and I got up and put him in the bed with me. That morning, he got up and he seemed to be fine except for a little cough. I asked him if he wanted anything to eat and he said no, then I asked him if he was thirsty and he said yes. I got him a cup of water. At that time, he was watching TV with his siblings. I went back into the room and the next thing I remember was my daughter knocking at the door telling me to come check on Grandpa that is what we called baby Destin. I went in and it seemed as if he was having a seizure, so I picked him up and called 911.

The whole time I was on the phone, I was calling his name with no response from him. The EMT arrived and worked on him in the house. They had no response from Destin so they put him in the ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. I kept asking if he was okay, but they would not tell me anything. When we got to the hospital the doctors did everything they could to resuscitate him. At that time, I did not know that my son was already gone. When I first called 911 after everything happened I wanted to know what happened to my baby and they couldnt tell me. I found out months later after burying my son that he passed away from Myocarditis. I did not know about Myocarditis until I lost my baby, Destin G. Johnson, on March 29, 2015. He was only 2 years old. It has been over three months since my baby died and I am still hurting. There is not one day that passes by that I do not think about him. I want to help spread awareness about Myocarditis and help people avoid the pain of losing a loved one to Myocarditis.
